Achievements
On October 31st 2009 at the AGM, Ngaitai Iwi Authority celebrates its’ 21st Birthday. Looking back we recognize the hard work of those from the past as their vision has shaped our pathway and cemented our stepping stones for the future.
- Recognition of the autonomy of Ngaitai Iwi
- Dedicated support to our Marae and Kura
- Advocacy & Support for whanau of Torere
- Recognised as the Ngaitai Iwi representative organisation
- by Local, Regional, and National Government Agencies
- by neighbouring Iwi and other Iwi
- Establishment of Torere & Districts Families Credit Union (since amalgamated with Eastwide Credit Union to form AWHI Credit Union)
- Confirmed as the recognised Iwi organisation (RIO for the purposes of Fisheries Allocation)
- Achieved Tax Exemption status with Inland Revenue Department
- Purchase in 2000 of a culturally significant section of the Takaputahi landblock (buy back of traditional Ngaitai confiscated lands)
- Te Hinahina o Te Rangimarie Housing project (the building of 20 interest free homes in Torere)
- Ngaitai Iwi Management Plan registered with Environment Bay of Plenty
- Establishment of Te Kumukumu Limited (Ngaitai Fisheries Asset Holding Company)
- Confirmed as the mandated Iwi organisation (MIO for the purposes of the Maori Fisheries Act 2004)
- Deepsea Fisheries Settlement received October 2006
- Member of the United League of Indigenous Nations
- One of several Iwi who signed the Treaty of the Indigenous League of Nations August 2008
- Registered as a Charity with the Charities Commission
