History

In 1987 Ngaitai Iwi decided to establish a body to represent the Iwi of Ngaitai. A series of Hui were held culminating with a Hui a Iwi at Torere Marae on the 26 November 1987, where Ngaitai Iwi agreed to the appointment of a steering committee as Interim Trustees, to take the necessary steps to establish an appropriate Tribal Authority. It was this Hui that established the Ngaitai Iwi Authority (NIA) as the ‘ears, eyes and voice of Ngaitai’. NIA was duly constituted under a Deed of Trust signed on the 3rd October 1988, and was incorporated under the Charitable Trust Act 1957 on the 10th October 1988. With the blessings of the kaumatua, the affairs of Ngaitai were placed in the hands of NIA to operate under the mana of the tribe to further the well being of Ngaitai socially, economically and culturally.

Since its’ establishment, NIA has represented Ngaitai locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. NIA provides whanau development services to the community of Torere and though based in Torere, Ngaitai Iwi Authority services Ngaitai descendants “irrespective of where Iwi Members reside.”
