Background
Torere was once a thriving farming community with dairy farms being the most prominent form of employment. The young sought employment in the cities during the years of urban draw.
They left Torere in the hands of our Elders, who nurtured the Mana of Ngaitai, preserving something for their children to come home to. This has been the strength of Ngaitai as an Iwi, the backbone on which future visions could be attained. Unfortunately the regions economic strengths deteriorated.
Our Elders recognised this position and set about rebuilding the future of Torere for the benefit of its Uri and those that reside within the tribal boundaries of Ngaitai.
As a result of a Hui at the Torere Marae on the 26 November 1987, the Iwi of Ngaitai agreed to establish a body to operate under the Mana of the tribe to further the well being of the Iwi socially, economically and culturally.
The Ngaitai Iwi Authority was incorporated under the Charitable Trust Act 1957 and registered on 3 October 1988.
